Planning a Denver game day or night out

Denver packs a remarkable number of big venues into a fairly compact area, which makes it easy to build a whole weekend around sport and live entertainment. A little planning goes a long way, though, especially when several events overlap downtown or traffic builds along I-25 on a busy Saturday.

Getting there and getting home

Empower Field at Mile High, Ball Arena and Coors Field all sit close to downtown, and on nights when more than one of them is busy, parking fills quickly and prices tend to climb. Light rail and buses are often the calmer option. Check the transit agency's service updates before you leave, and allow extra time after the final whistle or encore, when crowds leave all at once. Red Rocks is a different case: it lies in the foothills west of the city, so most visitors drive, share a ride or use an organised shuttle. Plan your return trip before the show starts.

Altitude, weather and comfort

At roughly a mile above sea level, visitors can feel the sun and dehydration sooner than they expect. Drink water, use sunscreen at daytime games and bring layers for evenings. Front Range weather can turn quickly, and an open-air seat at Red Rocks or a youth field in autumn can get cold fast. Bag policies differ from venue to venue, so check the official site for the event you are attending before you pack.

Tickets and timing

Buy tickets through the venue, team or promoter's official channels. That way you avoid inflated resale prices and fake listings. Arrive early for general-admission shows at places like Mission Ballroom if you want a good spot. For family events such as monster trucks or rodeo at the Denver Coliseum, earplugs for younger children are worth bringing.

Youth and high-school weekends

Friday night and Saturday morning football often happen alongside the big-ticket events. If you coordinate a team, a clear schedule and dependable messages save a lot of confusion. Our guide to how youth divisions work explains the structure, and the club email section covers keeping parents and players informed. For more practical reading, browse all our guides.
